Parish Project Group

April 2011

The Aveton Gifford Parish Project Group was set up in 1991 to make a pictorial and written record of the parish, foster interest in it and to conduct and support local projects.

Many activities have been undertaken, ranging from “beating the bounds” to exhibitions and talks. A collection of local photographs has been formed, over 900 of which have been digitalised and stored on computer. Many publications have been produced and these are listed below.

The names recorded on all the extant memorial stones in St. Andrew’s churchyard have been listed and copies in both alphabetical and numerical order placed in the church for the convenience of people seeking the graves of their ancestors (See the alphabetical list on this web-site). A copy has also been placed in the Cookworthy Museum in Kingsbridge.

A shelter has been provided for the parish stocks, which are displayed in front of the village school with the permission of the governors. A framed map of the footpaths of the parish hangs in the memorial hall.

The Group has recently completed an atlas of the tithe map of 1842 which is on the parish web-site, with a printed version available to interested parties.

The Project Group was able to make a donation of £2,000 towards re-establishing a post office store in the village and smaller donations have been made to other projects from time to time, including £500 to the recently completed Pre-School building.
