Police warning – Telephone Council Tax Scam

Devon and Cornwall Police have asked that residents be alerted to a further telephone Scam where bogus callers are stating you qualify for refunds of Council Tax due to property re-evaluation and will make the refund if you provide your bank account details.

Upon hearing they would qualify for a Council Tax refund a resident did pass their bank account details, then realising what they had done immediately contacted their bank to stop the payment.

Another resident paid £55.00 to process a council tax reduction. It would appear the Devon area is being targeted by fraudsters making various claims in order to obtain your banking details.

Please be reminded to never give any banking or other personal details to anyone.

If you receive a call and suspect it is a scam – tell the caller you will be reporting it to the police. Report calls of this nature to the police via the 101 no: quoting Operation Fardel which is the Devon and Cornwall Police response to crime of this type.
