Village Voice by Rosie Warrillow – 1st July

After last week’s exciting wedding, we are concentrating on events in the village this week. The Aveton Gifford Church and village Fete will take place next weekend on July 9th, with all the usual fun and frolics that go with it! Our fete is still very traditional with stalls including White Elephant, tombola, coconut shy and of course the ever popular pony rides for the children. There is usually a children’s entertainer and bouncy castle too as well as delicious cream teas in the village hall. There will be an exciting Grand Draw too with lots of very good prizes from our sponsors. We are lucky enough to have some very dedicated ladies that serve the teas in the hall, but they do need a bit of help in the cake making department, so if you can help with this important task please contact Pat Cassidy on 07816101693. Also please contact Pat or Lucinda if you can help serve teas etc on the day, they will be most grateful for any help that you can offer. The ladies on the cake stall would like similar help too, so if you would like to contribute to A.G’s Bake Off please contact Anne Neal on 550634. All we need for a successful day is some fine weather, so let’s keep our fingers crossed and pray that 2016 fete will be the best yet!

As another month is now upon us, it must be Jazz Club week! July certainly has popped up quickly, and this month’s featured Jazz Band will be the amazingly named Slide By Slide. This group has two trombone members, Kevin Grenfell and Richard Leach, with their accompanying band members Graham Smith, John Fellows and Roger Heeley, and together they give an unusual take on traditional jazz. This will be a superb evening’s entertainment starting at 7.30pm. The club welcomes guests as well as members, and of course there is the new Early Bird menu for jazz goers at the Fisherman’s Rest. If you pre-book a meal before the evening starts the folk at the pub will have it ready for you when you arrive! The menu is truly tasty with both meat and vegetarian options, and a really nice way to get to know your fellow jazz enthusiasts before the music starts. Please phone the Fisherman’s Rest for more details on 550284. The evening starts  onTuesday July 5th at 7.30pm.

The Photo competition for the calendar will end this week, so if you haven’t entered yet this will be your last chance for this year. The calendar will raise funds for the  village shop, and the winning pictures will feature in the calendar. I still haven’t received any info on the dog that won the dog show, please can someone let me know more of it’s story, it would be good as I believe it was a rescue dog that  was supreme champion.

St Andrew’s will have a Sunday worship service with Michael Tagent this week, and it will start at the usual time of 11am.
