Village Voice by Rosie Warrillow, 23rd August

The next meeting of Kingsbridge Jazz at Aveton Gifford is to be held on Tuesday, September 3rd in the Jazz Cellar at the Fisherman’s Rest. The musical guests for  September will be Jeff Barnhart with his wife Annie and their Sweet and Hot Quartet. They are  regular and very popular visitors to the club, having a regular spot in September. This is an all-ticket affair as the gig is very popular. They sing and play some lively upbeat jazz with a sprinkling of classical music too as Annie is a classically trained Flautist.. Tickets are available from the treasurer Fred Dennis on 01548-561005, and of course the Early Bird Menu is in place, just book with the pub.

There are some more  20 litre containers available from the water purifier at the pool. These useful containers are free to a good home, they have been used recently as bins and for storing all sorts of things, just contact Peter Smith on how to get yours. Keeping on the plastic theme and re-using and recycling, Caroline Barker would like some old 2-litre drinks bottles for a project, can you help?

It’s the Shop Extravaganza on tomorrow, Saturday, August 24th. There will be a barbeque, music, face painting for the children. Please come and support this lovely event, its aim is to raise money for two charities, Cancer Reasearch and Diabetes UK.

On Sunday, it’s the Classic Car Show, again and there will be lots of wonderful old vehicles to see and experience. There will also be a variety of stalls and food stands too and delicious Cream Teas in the pub. There will also be a Senna Racing Car to view and experience, a first for this event. John Foale will have his tractor on display and will be talking about his epic journey from John O’ Groats to Lands End early next year. A lovely day out awaits the vintage enthusiast this weekend, so don’t miss it!

St Andrews Church will be having a Communion by Extension service this week led by Reader Joyce Howitt, which will start at the usual time of 11am, everyone is welcome to join in, and there are refreshments after the service.
