Village Voice by Rosie Warrillow, 28th January

The congregation of St Andrews Church enjoyed a surprise visit from our Vicar Rev Rowland to take the service last Sunday, it was a swap between him and Reader Joyce Hewitt, but a very welcome one. Rev Rowland read a sermon on the story of Noah and the Ark and he drew many analogies from the present day trials and tribulations. There was of course no singing, but organist Vanda Irish played the hymns whilst the congregation listened.T his Sunday’s service is a Holy Communion with Rev Matt Rowland, which starts at the usual time of 11am. Sadly we have lost some of our residents recently. Shirley Mitchell, Bob Mitchell and Mervyn Moore have all passed away over the last few weeks, and they were all active and well liked members of our community, we send our deepest condolences to all their families.

Our village shop and its new shopkeeper Kathleen are stocking up with some exciting new lines, and also there is an extended deadline for the shop survey, which now ends on January 31st . Please fill in and return the forms to the shop or there is an online version on the village facebook/website. The survey will be a useful guide to the shop and help decide its future style and how best it can serve the community.

The Tennis club is moving forward with its future plan to become an independent club affiliated to the Lawn Tennnis Asociation. A new website is being constructed to help with all aspects of the clubs management. It’s in its infancy, but alresdy has regular news updates on it and when the court reopens it will be the go to place to renew memberships, to book the court and find out all of the club news. The web address is clubspark.ita.org.uk/.AvetongiffordtennisClub.

It’s Census year this year and a form will be winging its way to us all in the near future. The survey has taken place every 10 years since 1841 (except during 1941 because of the Second World War) to survey the population and housing needs. SHDC will have more information on the website.
