Well, Rugby’s Six Nations Championships are underway again with early results maybe not going the way we had all hoped with England’s early loss of their first game. To keep in touch with all the games, the Fishermans Rest is showing all of the matches on the big screen, just watch for the details on the boards outside the pub.
The Fisherman’s held a Burns Night spectacular last week to raise money for John Foales Great Tractor Run. An amazing £500 was raised and John is aiming to raise more funds on this amazing endeavour this spring when he takes the ‘Beast’ from John o Groats to Lands End. She has recently had new tyres, and has been undergoing road tests to prepare her for the amazing 1100 mile journey. Detailed planning of the route,sponsorship,publicity and stewarding are now being worked out with the help of volunteers. There are commemorative mugs on sale to help raise funds and the website thetractorrun.org.uk has further details on how to help with sponsorship etc.                                               Â
Our Junior Play Park is still closed at the moment due to essential work being carried out to comply with the annual inspection. The works will be carrying on for a few more days and the park will be opened as soon as possible.                                                                 Â
Devon Libraries have been reviewing their timetables recently to see how many people actually use the Mobile Libray services. The upshot of this survey has seen the changing of some times at more popular stops to give more time, and underused locations have stopped having a mobile service. Fortunately AG’s Mobile Library has not been changed, and it remains as 9.30am-10.30am once a month, on a Wednesday, the next visit is on February 26th. There is a charming new librarian, Heidi, waiting to provide us with our monthly reads. These services are very much under review and we need to make sure our service is maintained by using it regularly.     Â
It’s Soup and Puds week again, and our lovely ladies will be cooking up a storm providing lovely, warming homemade delights, available in the village hall tomorrow, Saturday, February 8th between 12-2pm.. All are welcome and the funds raised will go towards the upkeep of our village hall.         Â
Our WI ladies will be holding their regular monthly meeting in the village hall on Thursday, February 13th at 7.30pm. The subject of this months talk is about Hearing and is entitled All About Hearing and will be given by Lynn Falzarane from Devon Hearing Care. All are welcome to attend and there will be refreshments served after the talk and a useful question and answer session will be able to address any queries. There are also the usual competitions, Flower of the Month and to bring a small musical instrument.
St Andrews church will have a Family Communion service with the Children’s Sunday Club this Sunday at 11am, all are welcome to attend and Rev Matt Rowland will be leading.                                              Â
Sadly concerns have been raised about the discovery of two dead birds on the river during the last week. I know some have been hit by vehickles and some have had some more unexplained deaths. Please be vigilant when travelling down the tidal road, the wildlife we have here is spectacular and attracts many visitors and researchers.
