Village Voice by Rosie Warrillow – November 20th

All of a sudden, the weather has taken a wintery turn, but last weekend it was certainly a case of ‘Never fear, Soup and Puds are here’, as this popular event made a welcome visit to the village hall. Many weary, soggy guests were treated to lovely, hearty homemade soup and delicious puddings. There were three choices of each and all were equally tasty, the number of folk coming to enjoy the food was amazing and they just kept coming.

Well done to all the local ladies who cooked, served, and washed up, and kept everyone so happy and well fed. Due to Christmas commitments the next Soup and Puds event will be held in January so look out for the posters a bit later on.

Tomorrow in the hall the Christmas Craft and Gift fair will be held, featuring locally made food, including jams and preserves and also jewelry and clothing. Last years event was colourful and exciting with some wonderful gift ideas, some quite unique, on display.

Devon Highways have given notice of roadworks on the A379 due to start on Monday 23rd November. The work would include some re-surfacing and general maintenance and hopefully wouldn’t be upon us for more than one day, but it is a Monday and with early work traffic, there could be delays, so please be careful and watch your speed as there  maybe a possibility of queuing at busy times.

The shop A.G.M was very interesting, and highlighted the progress of the shop during the last year and some projects for the future. The main project is to provide an E.P.OS system for the shop, which would help with stock-taking, ordering and generally help to make the shop run more smoothly and easily for Dinah and her staff. This system is of course expensive, and hopefully fund raising will continue and make this a possibility for the near future. Staying with the shop, Christmas order forms should have reached most of us by now and you can order all manner of Christmas goodies through the shop. The deadline for placing your order is December 14th and orders can be collected from the village hall on this date. The shop is also appealing for more carrier bags as they are running low, so if you have any bags in good condition, please donate them for re-use there.

Looking forward to A.G’s Christmas celebrations, the date for the big Christmas Light switch on is December 6th. The fun will start at 6.00pm at the village hall, when there will be a procession down to the Fisherman’s Rest, with carols and lanterns. The Taverner’s Drama group are busy rehearsing some traditional entertainment as we speak and they will be performing after the big switch on in the pub. There will be mince pies and mulled wine, so put the date in your diaries!.

Unfortunately I have received details of another scam. Again very clever, and involves a surprise delivery and a phony credit card machine. Recently someone had over £4000 taken from their accounts after using what appeared to be a cash-card machine from someone purporting to be from a courier service. The ‘card machine’ actually cloned the unfortunate couple’s credit card details when their card was placed in the machine. Be on your guard for surprise gifts and unexpected deliveries and don’t use your card unless you are certain the delivery is legitimate – it can be so easy to be fooled.
