The Parish Council met last week and here are some of the main points raised, which I am writing about this week due to the new Gazette Monday deadline!
There was another clean up of the Tidal road on March 4th and volunteers met up to remove all sorts of rubbish that had been washed up down the river. Bits of plastic, boat parts and various bits of household waste had found its way on to the shoreline and these dedicated folk spent several hours removing it, keeping people and wildlife safe from this toxic menace. These clean ups are held regularly and the councillors were full of praise for the operation, and for SHDC which took the resulting rubbish away swiftly. Unfortunately there has been the sad discovery of three dead swans recently. The request for a memorial tree was turned down as a suitable place could not be found to put it. It’s hoped to get the swimming pool open as early as the first week in May, weather and maintenance programs permitted. There will be life saving courses for those interested in purchasing pool keys this year, details to be finalised later. The Classic Car show arrangements are progressing well, and this years event is expected to be as popular as ever. One thing to come up at the meeting was the lack of maintenance on the roads these days. Weeds are growing in Fore St and along the bridge on the main road..Could householders help? Is the frontage of your property on Fore St clear of weeds? Could you please help and clear the weeds from outside your house? If people could see their way to doing so it would indeed be a service to our community as Devon Highways no longer perform this task. The cold snap was discussed and thanks were offered to councillors who helped with the snow clearance and resident Mr John Reid was thanked for his help with the gritter. Councillors still have concerns about the build up of traffic outside the school at the beginning and end of the school day. People are urged to take care and pay special attention when passing the area at these times as vision can be blocked by parked cars, just slow down and be aware of the children and parents coming and going. The Village Stocks are receiving a face lift and are having a wooden frame built and will then be sited on Tree Corner.
The Lent course is already into its 5th week and the sessions have been well attended in church. The course is based on the Psalms and everyone is welcome to come and refreshments are served during the evening, which starts at 7.30pm.
There will be an Easter Craft Day for young children aged between 5-11 on March 24th in the Village Hall starting at 2.30pm – 4pm.The session will be run by Caroline Barker and donations of £1 would be appreciated. The children will be making Easter Gardens and decorating eggs. You can reach Caroline on 550730 for further details.
St Andrews will have a Lay led Common Worship service with Joy Winzer leading and Karen Rowse giving the talk.
Our W.I ladies have their Coffee Morning tomorrow at 10.30am with all the usual stalls and a raffle. All served with refreshments, everyone is welcome.
